Achan's Sin

Then Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and give him the praise. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me." Achan replied, "It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath." Joshua 7:19-21

Achan may have fooled the Israelites but God knew what he was hiding in his heart and in his tent. What would the world be like if we were all perfectly honest? What if we all had some sort of honesty indicator that visibly let people know when we were being less than truthful? Would we wink at our friend when he is telling a story about his catch during a fishing trip? Would we smile at our child when they told us that they didn't have any idea how a favorite vase got broken? Would our terminally ill parent understand when we say, "Don't worry everything will be all right."? As children of God, we must speak the language of God, which is truth. Anything less than the truth is a language that someone else knows all too well. "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44
